How I Saved ₹50,000 in 3 Months on a Student Budget (Without Skipping Coffee)

  Introduction

Saving money as a student might sound impossible — especially when every day tempts you with coffee runs, online sales, and weekend plans. But guess what? I managed to save ₹50,000 in just 3 months without giving up everything I love. If I can do it, so can you.

Let me show you exactly how I did it, what worked, what didn’t, and the small changes that made a big impact.

My Situation Before

  • Monthly pocket money: ₹6,000

  • Freelancing income: ₹10,000/month (writing & design gigs)

  • Hostel rent: ₹2,000

  • Zero budgeting skills ๐Ÿ™ƒ

  • Constantly broke by the 20th of every month

Step 1: Tracked Every Rupee I Spent

I used a free app called Walnut (you can also try Money Manager or Spendee) to track my spending for 7 days. I was shocked:

  • ₹1,500/month on Swiggy & Zomato

  • ₹800/month on impulse buys (Amazon etc.)

  • ₹600/month on snacks between classes

Just tracking my expenses helped me cut unnecessary spending by 30%.

Step 2: Followed the “50-30-20 Rule” (With a Twist)

Here’s my customized version:

  • ๐Ÿงพ 50% Needs: Hostel, groceries, travel

  • ๐ŸŽ‰ 20% Wants: Food delivery, outings

  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ 30% Savings: Auto-transfer to a digital savings account (I used SBI YONO Goal Saver)

Even if I earned only ₹10K, I forced myself to save ₹3,000 first, then used the rest. This “pay yourself first” method changed everything.

 Step 3: Started a No-Spend Challenge

For one weekend every month, I’d do a “no-spend challenge” — no eating out, no shopping, no extras. I cooked, watched free YouTube movies, and studied in cafรฉs (free AC ๐Ÿ˜„).

I saved about ₹1,000 every month just from these challenges.

Step 4: Made Extra Income With Freelancing

I signed up on:

  • Fiverr (design & CV writing)

  • Internshala (content gigs)

  • LinkedIn (cold DMed people for opportunities)

I consistently earned ₹10K–₹12K/month. Even ₹500 gigs added up fast. All my freelance earnings went straight into savings.

Step 5: Used Cashback + Student Discounts

  • UPI cashback apps like MagicPin, Paytm Offers

  • Student discounts at cafes, software (Spotify Premium ₹59/month FTW!)

  • Bought books second-hand or used free PDFs

This saved me ₹1,000–₹2,000/month.

My Monthly Budget Snapshot

CategoryAmount (₹)
Hostel2,000
Groceries & Essentials2,000
Eating Out / Fun1,500
Subscriptions500
๐Ÿ’ฐ Savings4,000–5,000

Final Results

After 3 months, I checked my savings account and saw this:

Total Saved = ₹50,134 ๐ŸŽ‰

More importantly, I felt in control of my money for the first time.

What You Can Try

  1. Start tracking your spending for just 7 days

  2. Set a small savings goal (₹5,000/month)

  3. Cut just 2 spending habits

  4. Pick a weekend for a no-spend challenge

  5. Try one small freelance gig online

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to earn a lot to save a lot. You just need a system, a little creativity, and the willingness to start. Trust me — the feeling of opening your account and seeing real savings is addictive (in a good way).
